How to Run a Pipe Klenz
Please check out our guide to learn how to run a Pipe Klenz in either your Spa or Swim Spa
Scum Line- Causes and Solutions
A scum line is most commonly caused by excess body fats in the water, but can also be caused by using Crystal Waters when there’s chlorine in the water, or by bathers’ skin products, such as fake tan, or by having the jets on when adding sanitiser to your spa.
Cause: Crystal Waters mixing with Chlorine
Solution: Add chlorine remover to the water. Clean scum line with a Spa Pad and a paste of Alkalinity Enhancer and water.
Cause: Excess body fats
Solution: Add a shock dose of Spa Boost to boost the rate the body fats burn off. Clean your filters, and boost the filtration time to 24 hours for a couple of days. Remove the scum line with a Spa Pad and a paste of alkalinity enhancer and water.
Cause: Skin Care Products
Solution: Add a shock dose of Spa Boost, clean your filters, and boost the filtration time to 24 hours for a couple of days. Remove the scum line with a Spa Pad and a paste of alkalinity enhancer and water. To prevent this, asking guests to shower before entering the water can help, as well as ensuring guests don’t wear fake tan in the water.
Cause: Jets on while sanitising
Solution: Turn the jets off and the filtration cycle on.
This will often clear the scum line as well, but if not, scrub the scum line with a Spa Pad and a paste of Alkalinity Enhancer and water.
Spa Foaming- Causes and Solutions
Foaming water is usually caused by excess body fats in the water. To fix the issue, add a dose of Spa Boost, clean your filters and turn the filtration time up to 24 hours for a couple of days if needed, then ensuring your spa is filtering for a minimum of 4 hours per day, and your filters are getting cleaned every 10 person hours.
If the above doesn’t work, check your Calcium (Total Hardness) levels on your test strips. Though rare, too much calcium can sometimes cause a foaming effect, and the only solution is draining the water.
If you need the foam to clear up urgently for aesthetics rather than to swim in, we have a product called Crystal Waters Anti Foam available on request which will temporarily remove the foam. However because Anti Foam lowers pH and alkalinity we don’t recommend bathing after use, until the pH and alkalinity are back in balance.
Please note, that Anti Foam only masks the problem, it doesn’t remove the foam.
Cloudy Water- Causes and Solutions
Cloudy Water can be caused by a number of issues. To diagnose the issue, test the water with Crystal Waters Test Strips.
Cause: Build up of excess body fats in the water
Solution: Add a shock dose of Spa Boost to boost the rate the body fats burn off. Clean your filters, and boost the filtration time to 24 hours for a couple of days, or until the water clears.
Cause: Incorrect Sanitiser or Clarifier dosing
Solution: If your sanitiser is reading low because you’ve missed a dosage, simply add the dosage you missed. If sanitiser is reading low because you topped up spa, or you’re unsure why it’s reading low, wait until the next time you’re due to dose your spa and give it the weekly dose.
If your sanitiser is reading high, drain 1/3 of the water out of the spa and refill with fresh water. Be sure to add chlorine remover, then retest the spa.
Cause: Clogged Filters in spas
Solution: Remove filters and clean with Crystal Waters Instant Filter Klenz. Filters will need replacing every 12 months in spas. Dose spa with Crystal Waters Spa Boost, and put the filtration cycle up to 24 hours for a couple of days or until the water clears.
Cause: Build up of body fats in the pipes.
Solution: Run a Crystal Waters Pipe Klenz. Our user guide can be found here.
Cause: High Alkalinity and/or high pH
Solution: Test with test strips and use pH Reducer or pH Down to bring levels down. Always balance Alkalinity before pH. For further instructions on balancing your spa, *click here*.
Cause: High Calcium/Total Hardness
Solution: If you’ve tried everything else and your spa is perfectly balanced, but your calcium is reading high, the only way to reduce calcium is to drain the water in your spa and start again. Calcium will only ever be high if you’ve dosed with too much Calcium Enhancer. To prevent high calcium readings, dose correctly initially and always make sure your pH and Alkalinity are in balance before looking at Calcium. Calcium will never read accurately until pH and Alkalinity are perfectly imbalanced.
Chemical Balance Record Sheet
If you are struggling with dosing your spa we recommend using a Chemical Balance Record Sheet. By using this to create a history of your spa looking after your spa will be easy!
How to remove Algae in a Pool
If your pool has been neglected over winter, or you have been away and the pool has turned green, depending on the severity, the easiest solution may be to shock treat with chlorine to bring back the pool and then add Crystal Waters chlorine remover prior to adding Crystal Waters Pool and Spa Solution products. Algae growth that appears on the wall or floor is usually associated with pool circulation so adjusting your pool return eyeballs can often eliminate these dead spots where algae grow. Remember to always brush algae growth to dislodge it.

How to Winterize a Swimming Pool
1. Backwash and clean filters as needed.
2. Add 1L per 10,000L of Shimmer Pool Algaecide. DO NOT add directly to skimmer box. Pool may go cloudy and/or foamy but this will clear in a day or 2.
3. Run filters for 4 hours per day
4. Sweep steps and swim-outs monthly
5. Maintain correct water balance. Check monthly.
6. Get a pool cover fitted to prevent leaves and debris
Repeat every 10 weeks. If swimmers are getting in the water, Crystal Waters Pool Sanitiser must be added prior.
